Common Watercraft Insurance Questions

Answers to what we hear most often.

Some homeowners policies offer limited watercraft coverage, typically for small boats with low horsepower engines, and usually only while on your property. Larger boats, jet skis, and any vessel used on open water should have a dedicated watercraft policy for proper protection.

Many watercraft policies extend coverage to the boat and trailer while being transported. However, the trailer itself may require separate coverage, either through the watercraft policy as an endorsement or through your auto policy. We'll make sure there are no gaps in coverage when you're on the road.

Navigation territory defines where your policy covers you, for example, inland waterways only, up to a certain number of miles offshore, or across international waters. If you go beyond the defined territory, a claim may be denied. We'll make sure your policy matches where you actually boat.

Coverage for fishing gear, trolling motors, fish finders, and onboard electronics varies by carrier and policy. Some include them as part of the base coverage; others require a scheduled endorsement. If you have significant gear on board, we'll make sure it's properly accounted for in your policy.
